Why Insulate?
Insulation prevents the loss of heat in the winter and the hot air of summer from entering your home. This is because insulation resists heat flow. Heat flow is a critical element in your energy usage. Heat naturally moves from warm places to colder places. In winter, the heat produced by your heating system moves from the warm inside to the unheated spaces such as attics, garages, basements and crawlspaces or directly outdoors. To make up for the loss, your homes heating system needs to run more often to keep a constant indoor temperature. In the summer when it’s warmer outside heat will flow into your home causing your air conditioner to work harder to keep the inside cool.  By installing the appropriate amount of insulation this heat transfer can be reduced, due to insulations heat flow resistance, thereby saving you money on your utility bills. Most utility companies will even offer you rebates for making insulation improvements to your home.

How is Insulation Measured?
Insulation is rated by its R-Value. This is a measure of its thermal resistance, or how well it holds back warm or cool air. Bare concrete foundation walls are about an R-1 while new attic insulation measures an R-38. R-Value is proportional to the insulations thickness but it also depends on the type of material being used and its density. The higher the R-Value the better thermal resistance you’ll get for the given area.

Types of Insulation
For crawlspaces we can install Faced or Unfaced materials. Faced materials are the batts of insulation with paper backing while unfaced materials have no barrier on them at all. We can also install Cotton batted insulation which is made of recycled denim.

In Attics there are several options. We can install Fiberglass blown in material or Cellulose blown in material. Cellulose insulation is made from recycled newspaper and is fire retardant. It is very common to use cellulose because of the “green” movement we’re experiencing. Its cost effectiveness is about the same as fiberglass. Also available for your attic is batted fiberglass or cotton batts.

The other type of insulation available is Spray Foam Insulation. This is an application of expanding foam that will cover an entire subfloor, attic or walls. If you want to keep rats out of your insulation this is the way to do it. Spray foam insulation may be your best bet in the quest against critters. This is a material that is less conducive to rats. They don’t like the material. They might chew or scratch at it here or there, but they’re not going to destroy everything like they may with other types of insulation.

The professional spray foam is much like the ready foams available at hardware stores, but it’s a much more scientific mixture. The base can also have soy added to it so it has the green aspect going on instead of having a petroleum-based product added to it.
